A couple of days ago my intrepid sister in-law in Chaing Mai drove to Korat with 3 of her friends and infiltrated the Thai army base where the M601s are being held hostage. The soldiers where so amazed that 4 girls would want to bid on 300 army trucks that they threw open the gates and rolled out the red carpet. When she asked the captain who was conducting the tour if the trucks where being sold as scrap he laughed and said "you don't know how valuble they are, do you". They bring about the same price that a truck in similar condition would here in the US, they typicaly sell for $450 each. This is not the first sale, they have one every year, and the same persons win the bid each year! The Thai army has Thousands of these trucks and they are properly maintained, however when one gets to the point that it is not repairable they push it into a field and eventualy sell it. The real story here is that no matter where you go in the world these trucks are considered to be too valuable to scrap and are the first choice for transport in undeveloped countries. You can actualy place an order with the PW Mafia there for a PW part and they will find it for you. This is done by providing a photo of it to go by. They even fly into Laos and Viet Nam to get parts! The Saudis are the main customers for the trucks there because nothing else can be used off road in the deasert without coming apart. Item number 0001 in the catalog (293 trucks) is being broken up into smaller parcels, which means that if you are not in Thailand you would not be able to bid efectivly. But since the bid winners are known BEFORE the bids are opened who cares! When I get to Thailand I will follow up on the use of these trucks in their military and get pictures as well. If joe wants to donate 1meg of site for the photos I have recived of the M601s I will email them to him so you can see what 300 PWs parked togeather look like.
