Back in the early '80's, back in NE Ohio (where county fairs and sanctioned pulls were taken seriously) my buddies were pulling (and winning) with built small block Chevies. Truck classes were stock, superstock, and modified. Each class had a 5000' and 6000' weight class. A truck could pull in both weight classes by adding/subtracting weight. I do recall at least one flat fender PW that was one of the regulars. If I recall he was required to pull in modified class (he probably was running a V8 thus could not be stock or superstock. I never recall seeing a PW compete against tractors. I once pulled my cherry '62 Chevy 1-ton w/ a 327 in stock class. The pull was set up so that all the highly competitive regulars who were bound to place would pull last and all the local yokels like me pulled first (makes for a more exciting show for the crowd). I pulled early on, smoked my clutch most of the way down the track, and held first place 'till the last four pullers made full pulls and had a faceoff with more weight on the sled.
I should dig out those photos and scan them!AHHHH Memories!!!! Bruce
