The transfer case is really made up of the same components as the much-worshiped NP205. About which no-one ever complains about being "weak".
These transfer cases are designed to take the torque multiplication of the engine at the reduction of the lowest gear, 1st, which is about 6.40-6.68:1, depending. Offroad designs in colorado, which does a lot of work adapting the NP203 front half gear reduction box to 205s, states that the "weak link" of the 205 is rear output shaft which is 1-3/8", just like the input. It's not really a weak link, it's just what would break first if the transfer case were tested to destruction. they estimate that would take at least 3500 ft-lb. That, multiplied by 4.89 is about 17000 ft-lb. with 36" tires that corresponds to a drawbar pull of over 11,000 lbs. You'd certainly break an axle shaft first, those are minimum 1.25" in diameter and subject to 4.89-5.83 times as much torque as the transfer case.
