Clear coat it. If the sheet metal is decent , tossing clear coat on it will protect the metal but make it easier to see what is underneath. When I see a sloppy paint job I think someone is hiding something. When I see bare metal or a coat of clear coat, I figure the seller is being upfront and not attempting to hide a thing.
So we both agree, paint is a good idea.
