Things to consider about engine oil. (This applies to new oil to some extent.)

Oil does not wear out. Lubrication - the first function of oil is to be between the moving metal parts to reduce friction and wear.

Additives to oil - some additives are primarily there to affect the oil.

Other chemicals added to the engine - these affect other aspects of the engine such as preserving seals.

You can buy USED motor oil that has none of the additives or chemicals or you can buy RECONDITIONED oil that has some.

The Army and many fleet applications rely on the filtration system to keep the oil clean. Oil is tested for additives and chemicals which are added as needed.
