I started an autopsy on the failed chicom coil.
The plastic top looked dislodged on one side like something had pushed it out of the metal body. I carefully sawed the lower end off of the metal body and pushed the molded plastic coil with the cap out of the metal cylinder.
The secondary high voltage output side of the winding is connected to the plastic top using a metal spring and the primary winding wires are crimped to the studs in the top.
One of the primary wires was open at the stud.
My theory of the failure is that the entire coil expanded from normal operation heat until the top cap had been pushed out enough to catch on the end of the metal body, then when it all cooled down and contracted the wire was pulled apart.
