The benefit is that the "hackers" were paid researchers and told Chrysler before the press, so a fix has already been put out by Chrysler. The hack also required some unique info which required additional work or technology, or direct access to the car to get.

The downside is that yes, once they can access the network (CAN bus) inside the car they basically can modify anything controlled via computer, which on most modern vehicles is just about everything.

But that's what everyone wants, autonomous cars, infotainment systems, etc. I'll admit it allows for some amazing capabilities in modern vehicles. Technology sells cars today, but for those that don't want that the cheaper solution is just to not buy all the extra bells and whistles. The Chrysler was hackable only if it had the built-in cellular modem, most probably aren't buying that option.
