Nothing wrong with larch. It's as strong as doug fir and as rot-resistant as cedar. And of course our trees are straight while theirs are crooked. I do wish we could get some decent white oak cheaply around here like the can back east. It's the best for side boards and beds because it's tough and doesn't rot very fast. Strangely enough I've heard good things about cottonwood for high-abuse applications like beds of lowboy trailers. You'd think it would be soft and would rot fast but they say it holds up really well and if you soak it with used oil it doesn't rot.
