I have the same set up, used a rheostat, cheapie from somewhere, lasted about 9-10 years but with limited use. Then it burned out and haven't gotten around to replacing it but haven't been driving in the Vermont winters too much lately. I'm guessing you're in Georgia, so your cheapie might last a lifetime? Yes, 24v.
