Unless you have access to the parts needed at a big discount or laying around. You'd be ahead to get a built unit. Do your homework on what works best together and Arboristsite.com or firewoodhoardersclub.com are a great place to see ideas if you haven't all ready been there.
Gas wise it doesn't pan out but I totally get it if you just want to do it. What unit are you looking at? ram size?, etc
I wanted features not offered so I built my own. Cost effective ? No. But it allows me to do stuff that 2 guys would struggle with.
Main thing to look at as you probably know is RPM needed to deliver gallons per minute on the pump. You don't want it to be so slow that you wait too much on it to cycle.
