It's mostly about crush area. There is far more engineering into how energy is transferred in the event of a crash. A good vehicle is designed to absorb and direct it around the passenger compartment as much as possible.
There was little to no ability to do that in the day these trucks were built. Seatbelts and air bags just assist the vehicle in doing that.
