I saw you posted that you thought the carb was loading up at idle. It could well be starving for fuel at idle. It would of course then run better when you hit the throttle and pump some fuel in.

The tiny holes inside the venturi near the butterfly plate are for idle. Because they are so small, they are easy to clog and hard to clean. Compressed air wont clean hard crud from inside the ports of these small holes. The vacuum created by the venturi merely sucks fuel from the bowl up thru these small ports and vaporizes the fuel in the venturi. Any blockage results in poor fuel flow at idle. A vacuum leak will do the same.

I strip my carbs down to bare metal and bake them in an oven for about 20 minutes at 350 degrees. While still hot (and the crud is soft), then blow out the ports with air. It only takes a tiny blockage to make the engine run bad.

Those old carbs were bulletproof, they just need a good cleaning. Dont give up on them.
