knock gear = rubber inside of a gear?

I do recall that the trannies in 60s Chevys had a 4th gear built like a motor mount with rubber between inner part and outer part. But I didn't know it was a variant in transfer cases.

Maye it prevents gears from coming unscrewed? But you really should tune it and drive it so as to prevent knocking.
