They are supposed to be very good to have around for some reason or another (can't remember what) Maybe they eat bad bugs or something. I know some people actually drill a bunch of holes in a board and hang it up somewhere for the bees to make use of. Not sure if that would keep them from settling elsewhere, but I'm reluctant to kill anything that I don't have a good reason to kill. I have noticed that they're very particular about the diameter of hole that they like. A little too big or a little to small, and they ignore it. Of course the problem is when they can't find one ready-made, they drill their own.
