Pop the sender out of the tank. Then pop the cover off the sender and check that the arm is still rubbing on the wire coil and that the coil is not rubbed through. Then check to see if the top of the coil is touching the metal cover as that will ground out the sender (mine was doing that). Obviously check for a burned wire while you have the cap off.
