open knuckle or closed

I've had several swepy power wagons...and the steering radius is not so good. I heard that open knuckles would tighten up the turn. But I was thinking that allowing the steering gear box to travel further(with an open knuckle swap) may harm the gear box.

Is that a concern? If not...which donor truck would be a good choice to replace my closed knuckles on a 68 and a 70 w200. Thanks guys
