I wonder what would give first, with an M37 chained to a tree. Hopefully the winch shear pin which has not been replaced with a grade 8 bolt or rusted together. My M543 wrecker has a 50,000 lb rear winch and came with a pair of poles with wide "feet" on them that you can fit into sockets on the back of the bed, with the feet digging into the ground. I've never tried to use them, but I imagine it like a person digging in their heels and leaning back to pull hard on a rope. The way it's set up, the force of the pull is transferred directly from the winch, through a reinforced part of the bed, and to the "feet", so it doesn't put a strain on the bed-frame bolts or the truck's suspension. I only use the rear winch one time, to pull a stump that was too big to pull using the wrecker boom, and didn't need the "feet" for that.
