Brake fluid is hygroscopic (DOT 3 & 4 anyway). You wouldn't want one open to atmosphere if you can avoid it. Most of the factory versions have a rubber diaphragm in the lid to allow for expansion and contraction while keeping the fluid/air interface sealed or restricted.
