Machined mating surfaces should never be painted! If they assemble with gaskets or not! There are specific tolerances to their fit. If gasket-less, apply a small bead of what is known as 'grape jelly' or Locktite 515 flange sealant or equiv. This will seal the metal to metal surface with less than .00001 thickness, It is used for all metal to metal high strength applications. I use it on the Oshkosh front axles I rebuild and on differential carriers that I install as it is specified in the manual. Also, do not paint the outer cup surface (the ball end of the axle housing with the trunnion studs)or the inside of the flanges and cups. Only a metal sealant like red glyptol should be applied to these surfaces. (Same thing on transmission and transfer case interiors)
