One of the first things I would like to do with the new to me Power Wagon is replacing the older non-directional tires with a new set of rubber. Of course my truck has the 16" locking ring style rims and the tire of choice will probably be the 9.00/16 STA Superlugs. I have a tire shop here in town that works on big trucks and said they should be able to work with me on switching the tires/tubes/flaps over. One of my main questions is the safety of the locking ring style of rim -- probably more so due to a local mechanic was killed within the last year from a tire that gave way when he was removing the tire/rim assembly from the truck (It may have been the split rim and not split ring style -- I did not want to ask the family too many questions after what they went thru). Once the tires are seated/aired up are the rims/tires fairly safe to move around and mount/dismount from the truck? If I am looking at removing the rims to work on/adjust the brakes/axles/etc how worried should I be a ring could let loose? I would be starting with/using non rusty/non compromised rims/rings in good condition. I have mounted/dismounted many a farm tractor tire with tubes but have never dealt with the locking ring before. I know more modern rims can be ordered/fabricated that are safer but not original -- I also know that there are thousands of these rims on trucks that have no problems -- I guess I am just looking for reassurance from you experts about your experiences with the locking rings and any troubles that have come up or things I should watch out for.

On a side note I see Coker Tire has the STA Superlugs at $260 each and Vintage Power Wagons has then for around $290 -- I imagine that is about the going price? I know I will also need flaps and new tubes for the older style rims.

Thank You in advance for any response.
