If I bought an all-original truck I would keep the original flathead engine. If the truck was chopped up I would probably install a 318 or 360, like I did with the 6x6. The military body was all gone, and the Plymouth 230 had a rod knock. The truck was not a good candidate for a restoration, so I opted for a 318. I paid $600 for the engine, bellhousing and NP435, and $900 for the machine work and new parts. So $1500 for a new engine (plus lots of extras), or about 25-30% of the cost to buy, repair and install a 3.9 Cummins and transmission. This truck will only travel 500-1000 miles a year, so fuel economy is not a real concern
