A WC was designed to cruise at convoy speed of 35 mph, and maybe speed up to 45 on the open road. Add more power and you need more brakes, which you've done. But if you get much more speed, by whatever means, I think you'll find it doesn't handle very well at 70 mph. The suspension and steering just aren't designed for it. It could get squirrelly if you hit a bump or a slick spot at freeway speed. More speed and power, not to mention bigger tires, makes it easier to break an axle shaft. The bottom line is yes you can make it go faster, but will it be safe and can you keep it under control?

My feeling is old trucks go slow, and that's that. The practical alternative, if you just like the looks of the WC, is to put the body on a modern chassis. Lots of them have been done like that. I think it's a waste of an old truck, but to each his own. I'd feel better driving a Chevy Suburban at 70 mph than an over-powered WC.
