Inline 6's also tend to be stronger since only one connecting rod is connected to each throw of the crank, and they are matched more evenly with the number of bearings in the engine vice a V8. They also are inherently balanced too, which makes them smooth. Biggest problem is size, they're long and tall hence the slant in the slant 6.

So yes, the total HP & Torque probably don't look great but for long hard lives where low end torque is king it's hard to beat in inline 6.
