Heat and flux is what cleans the joint.
Don't sand, grit is deadly to soldering, use clean steel wool if you have to.
Never use scotchbrite pads, they're worse than sandpaper.
The tinning on the iron is what transfers heat.
If the tip of the iron isn't mirror bright when it heats up then clean it and re-tin.
