After some frustration with various unknown gauges and senders and whether or not they're connected right or are working right or are right with each other, I've decided the only way to do it is to bench-test the gauge and proposed sender together using a battery or 12 volt power supply, until you know you have the connections right and you know that moving the float causes the needle to move exactly the way it should. Lots of screwball combinations with sort of somewhat work, but won't be right.
