Air Filter for WWII Dodge

My WC53 came with a civilian Carter carburetor. The model number escapes me at the moment (B or C…) single barrel down draft. The carb works fine, but the oil bath air filter perched on top of it has been giving me trouble.

The filter is bolted to an adapter, which is in turn hose clamped to the carburetor. The arrangement wasn’t all that stable and I finally took it off after another oil splash found it’s way out the hood louvers.

I understand the oil bath is a better filter, but until I can figure out a stable way to mount it, I put one of those small (4 to 6” dia) paper air filters on.

It seems to run fine, but I have a couple questions.

The box the filter came in says for off highway use only. There are no pollution control systems related to the air cleaner on my 1942 truck, so I don’t see why I couldn’t use it on the highway. I’m not altering it really. Am I overlooking something?

I’m also worried about enough air getting through the filter… Are these smaller paper filters units too small?

Thanks,
