Filling with grease causes atleast two things to happen--both bad. The first was already mentioned. The upper bronze bushing (or Timken roller bearing if its been upgraded)will not get proper lubrication. The second thing, and by far the most damaging, is that the joint just digs itself a cave in the grease. Essentially a pocket is formed as the joint/coupling spins. Again, lack of lubrication.
The upside is that yes, there are no external leaks. But I can live with the leaks. It is a constant reminder to me that the fluid level should be checked on a regular and frequent basis.
