I just completed this task this last weekend on my 74 D200 Dana 60 FF. I dont know really how to describe it but on mine you couldnt just slide it in and expect it to go all the way in. You almost had to lift the axle slightly to get it to go in the last inch or so. ALmost like the spline side of the axle was catching on something and you needed to just lift it slighting and maybe even a slight turn to get the splines to line up in the rear end. One you get it started it should go right in and then turn the drum to line up your axle nuts.
