George, one of the draw-backs to electric brakes is the wiring, but this is true with trailers in general. Running wires through torched holes and axel tubes are common and bad practice. Idealy, trailer wiring should be in weather-tight conduit, or loom at least. Then, the most vulnerable wires are those that are exposed before entering the brake backing plate, and those areas are easily monitored and repaired. I haven't seen any electric brakes w/two different sized shoes. It seems that the higher the rating of the axel, the higher quality of the brake componants. Other than wiring, maintanance is the next biggest factor. I check my shoes , magnates, seals, and bearings before every major trip, and then do a wheel-by-wheel shoe adjustment. I caught 3 bad seals on my last inspection. One had started to leak but the others were on the way out! Alas, I have had no personal experience w/the air systems you mention. Do air/vac systems have any variable control from the cab? Can you adjust the brakes for differnt loads? Are they compatable with anti-lock brake systems on the tow vehicle? Sorry for the run-on post...
