A Cummins 4B is four cylinder 3.9 liter normally aspirated (around 80-85hp), a 4BT is the same engine with a turbo (105hp), a 4BTA is the same engine with an aftercooler (water or air) added (125hp).

If the engine as a dash in the nomenclature such as 4BT-A, then it is a four cylinder, turbocharched 3.9 liter engine putting out 105hp configured for automotive use.

The current nomenclature is the engine series followed by displacement dash horsepower. So the current version of the 4BT is known as a B3.9-130 (note that the new version has 130hp compared to the older rating of 125).

The even newer versions with the electronic controls are ISB3.9-xx.
