If that's true then why are 600,000 diesel pickups a year selling in this country? If it was just "the torque" you could put s supercharger on a big gas engine like a V10 or 8.1 Chevy. Do you know what mileage one of those would then get? 5-6 mpg, maybe.
I think people DO care about about $0.08-15-20/mile. If someone drives 30,000 miles/year with $2/gal fuel that adds up to roughly the added cost of the diesel in one year.
In investing (rich people invest a lot of their money, they don't spend ALL of it on toys) a 100% rate of return on your investment is considered to be an absolutely astounding rate of return.
That just COULD be one little reason why people are buying so many diesel trucks. They do care about mileage, as long as they can supply the torque.
