Diesel RPM Question

There seems to be a wide variance in the top RPM for the diesel motors suitable for the PW. My only experiences are a turbo diesel in an Isuzu PU and varius CAT products. I was wondering if it (4b etc) is because most of the industrial aps use a more constant and lower RPM as gears and hydraulics do the work and speed is not needed, or if there are other specific design reasons. The difference between 3000 and 3800 RPM seems major when talking about a light truck app.

By the way, thanks to everyone for a great forum.
