The gist of the story was that yes, Popeye's "Jeep" was a big influence, but also it was initially a term in general use for any small or insignificant thing. They cited a few other vehicles and even planes that had been referred to as "jeeps" and also said it was a term in the army for new recruits. Also there was some influence from Jazz lingo. The little trucks were sometimes referred to as "peeps" early on. After the war there was a big trademark fight over it and several people claimed to have invented the term.
