speedometer woes

I finally got my WC52 on the road today, but have no idea how fast I am going, as the speedometer does not work. The cable is new and the speedometer works when the cable is driven by a drill. I deduce that the problem is in the speedometer drive pinion -shown as "Pinion, Drive, Transmission speedometer" in the parts manual, part # CC-571656 (SW-90922).
Has anyone else fixed this problem and do you have a "modern" part number for the above part or the part I really need?
