Seems someone who had a bit of an idea what they were doing pieced this engine together. They did some good stuff like using the 230 crank, etc, with the 218 head, but also seems they cut costs with the pistons and assembly. Rods not checked and bent sideways will chew up the piston at the pin, next stage is the circlip jams between the piston and the bore and chews a groove down the bore, then piston, rings and eventually rod failure if you keep pushing it and turn it into a pile of scrap metal. Seems you got to it just in time, so I applaud your decision to pull it down, when initially it seemed to me that engine would be OK.
