Kirk: Technical manual TM 9-8031-2 covers all your questions. The input shaft nuts and output shaft nuts get torqued to 140-160 pound feet. The pre-load on the bearings is 15-30 pound inch. (not pound-feet) I don't have a torque wrench that goes that low, so I took shims out until I felt what seemed to be 17.500 inch pounds of torque.... And it has worked fine for three years.
