Those sorts of machines are a testament to how much more time, more skill, and less money our grandparents' generation had. I have a little benchtop horizontal milling machine made totally from scratch by my grandfather's brother. He retired as a machinist for the state of Oregon and then immediately built his own small-scale machine shop at home, building all the machines from scratch. Guys used to do stuff like that. Now we have the Chinese to build us fairly decent machines for a price that we can earn in just a couple days' work.
