These days the bean-counters would say to the engineers "Why spend $2 on latches when you could spot-weld it for free? Our focus groups have never mentioned heater core access as something they consider when making a purchasing decision." They even blew another buck on putting the blower motor together with 2 bolts rather than welding or crimping the shells, and made the brushes long enough that they're still good after 50 years.
