Just a thought. Your frame has been used for years and has not cracked at the joint. Instead of scabbing in more plate on the rails have you thought of adding an extra crossmember?
The crossmember bridges the gap at the joint. I have done this and it has worked fine , hides the welds, and the joint is strengthened with bolts and is an area that has a little less flex than the rest of the frame.

Not sure if any one else has ever done this but I kind of push the addition of an extra crossmember when doing a rear clip.
