Running it like that will start to loosen up the rings and all the other "goodies" in there. I would do a compression test, then run it again and do a hot compression test and base any further actions on the results. If the results say rings, then go for it, valve lap, new shells , gaskets and oil and good for another heap of years. If you get into it check the basics, timing chain, water distribution tube, slop in the distributor, any lip in the top of the cylinders, that sort of stuff. You could be on a winner there.
