If you have the front axle disengaged by lockouts, when traveling at speed the front axles, diff and drive line will be either stopped or barely turning by way of grease friction if you engage the front axle at the tcase this way you will grind the front axle driven gear in the tcase. Thus it is better for the tcase to simply have the levers split. When the single lever was reused in 1969 we used to have to feel if the front axle was in or out by pulling slightly on the lever and if you felt / heard a grind you knew the front axle was disengaged.
