I still hope to see the Caladay hoist before they close the mine and entomb it in the mountain. It was build in the 1920s, but never installed until the mid-60s, and is supposed to be still in operating condition. What makes it unusual is it's powered by a direct-drive DC motor. All other mine hoists that I'm aware of have quite a bit of reduction between the motor and the drum. If you know how slowly a mine hoist drum turns, and how much torque is on it, that gives you an idea of the physical size of motor needed. I used to know I guy who worked on it and he said he needed to climb to the top of a 10' ladder just to change the brushes, which were each the size of a brick. It's a mile back inside the mountain, though, so there's no way I can see it unless I can get someone at the mine to take me in.
