Steaming like a cup of coffee outside on a cold day, not hissing. But when the thermostat opened the warm water would be hitting the cold stuff in the radiator and mixing in the top chamber (which I just put in)
As for the color, it was a bit darker and less clear, more murky from dirt/rust/whatever I think. It didn't seem to be boiling itself.
I'm thinking of trying a heat gun on the radiator, warming a path which would hopefully expand if the hot fluid could circulate. It's going to be warmer mid week, so that might help too. Once it gets flowing again I'll swap out what's in there for stuff of a known mixture.
