Might be a little pricey and take some work but have you ever thought about wireless magnetic light system? A friend of a friend has a towing business and they are REALLY slick as he just sticks them on top of the vehicle he's towing and they do whatever the tow truck's lights are doing. No wires and no holes.
I'm thinking one could adapt whatever magnets they use to fit into period correct fixtures. The ones he had stuck REAL good and were not huge like the Towmate lights. I do not know the brand he had but might be an angle to think about.
It plugs into the trailer plug and you could hide the transmitter. Look at Ebay item
