For arguments sake, the classic car guys are buying scrapyard electric power steering colums and retro fitting them ( splice the under dash unit into the original steering column). You keep your original steering box and upper steering column. Takes 12 volts. Cost seems to be running under $300 with the electrical controller ( $65 on ebay).
My WC 51 is finished, but I may do this to the '65 Rustang I'm working on...
