No problems with the joining- I used a red pre-tinned crimp connector with the plastic stripped off. Also pencil lead stops the solder from bleeding over the ends into the tubes. Then pre-tin the ends of the tubes. Assemble and very lightly crimp, then solder.

Then the fun begins, calibrating it. You have to tweak some parts in the gauge. Easy to get it to read 212 in boiling water, but the challenge is to also get it right at 160.

That was 2006, and it still works.
