This has been an issue for longer than the fiat take over.
the vans had a rep for eating their transmissions. The NV5600 was a great trans except the dealers could not get parts for even the smallest item. And if a Dodge dealer needs an engine for a sprinter it costs them 7 grand more than a Mercedeze dealer will pay for the same engine.
And if my sons jeep is any indication , it was not built to go off road. Amazing the number of parts that little four banger could manage to wear out.
That said my wifes 1998 van just hit 360.000 kms on the original engine and trans. valve covers have never been off and I changed the trans fluid once. It does need new rotors about once a year, but that is about it, even has the original exhaust system.
