michelin xl question

I looked at some xls today. Overall condition was nice, but some gorilla damaged a couple of the inner tire lips where the rim flange sits on. The damage consist of 2-3 inch long by 1/2 -3/4 inch wide sections of rubber torn or missing at tip of the lip. I would assume the flanges on our rims are big enough to cover the imperfections and tubes will keep the air in, or am I shaking hands with danger? sorry for the long post. Thanks Wayne
