Reproducing the original 4.89 would be way different then designing a new gear ratio set. Plus there is a limit to how much different the ratio between the ring and pinion can be before it affects the design of other parts.

At the end of the day I'm not sure the demand could justify the cost. VPWs run of new 4.89s probably cost a small fortune. Benefit of that ratio is it works with both repowers and sock. Otherwise most just go to a more modern axle, takes a lot of other problems away at the same time and is no more expensive at worst.

Now, what might be worth it to some would be a custom wheel hub or adapter to go from DANA axle to the BUDD lug pattern. Modern axle with the classic looks. Definitely easier then designing a new hypoid gear.
