Sure, it will work. But, better to gum up a $40.00 Harbor Freight gun which will do the job just fine. When it comes time to put on the final coat, you will be happy that you have a nice, new and clean gun to work with.
Anybody who does much painting will have a dedicated primer gun. When you spray primer, you are basically just spraying mud (well, not really, but you get the idea).
In reality, all these guns are low-cost guns. Your gun might be the primer gun for someone who paints professionally. Or, more likely, his primer gun is better than your finish gun.
You will be sanding the primer, so a perfect finish doesn't matter so much. When you put the finish coat on, you want it to be as near perfect as possible.
And, when you apply primer, make sure it is the easy to sand kind.
